Cervical Spine MRI Cost: Neck Scan Prices in 2026
The cervical spine is the seven neck vertebrae from C1 (atlas) to C7. Cervical MRI is the second most commonly ordered spine MRI after lumbar, with neck pain, arm radiculopathy and post-whiplash workups driving most referrals. Prices below cover UK NHS, UK private and the full US spread.
Cervical MRI at a Glance
What a cervical MRI shows
Cervical spine MRI provides cross-sectional images of the seven cervical vertebrae, the intervertebral discs at each level, the spinal cord running through the cervical canal, the exiting nerve roots that supply the arms and hands, the facet joints and the surrounding ligaments and paraspinal muscles. Per Radiopaedia's cervical MRI article, the standard non-contrast protocol uses sagittal T1, sagittal T2, sagittal STIR, and axial T2 sequences as a minimum.
The radiologist reports on disc degeneration, disc bulge or herniation at each cervical level, spinal-canal stenosis and any cord compression, neural-foraminal narrowing, facet arthropathy, vertebral changes, marrow signal, and any incidental findings in the surrounding soft tissues. The cervical region is unique among the spine MRIs because it also images the upper portion of the spinal cord, which means clinically significant myelopathic findings can sometimes be detected even when the imaging was ordered for neck pain or radicular arm symptoms.
As with lumbar MRI, asymptomatic findings are common. A reported 25 to 60 percent of adults without neck pain show some degenerative changes on cervical MRI. The presence of a finding does not necessarily explain symptoms, and this is why ACR and NICE both emphasise correlation with clinical examination rather than imaging in isolation.
UK cervical MRI pricing
UK private cervical MRI without contrast, as of May 2026: Vista Health from £325 in regional centres and £395 in London; Nuffield Health from £395 nationally; Spire Healthcare from £375 with bookable online slots; Bupa Cromwell from £450; OneWelbeck (London specialist centre) from £550 with consultant interpretation included. Self-referral with no GP letter is permitted at every one of these providers. Report turnaround runs 1 to 5 working days at all major chains.
Adding contrast (for suspected infection, tumour, or post-surgical scan-tissue evaluation) typically adds £100 to £200. A few specialist centres offer cervical MRI with dynamic flexion-extension views for evaluation of suspected ligamentous laxity; these are billed as a single longer study at £550 to £900 because they require a specialised protocol.
For UK NHS patients, cervical MRI is free with a referral. Routine wait runs 6 to 18 weeks; urgent referrals (suspected cervical myelopathy with motor signs, sudden severe neck pain with neurological deficit) are typically scanned within 1 to 2 weeks. Suspected cervical-cord trauma is an emergency and is scanned same-day in A&E.
US cervical MRI pricing in detail
Healthcare Bluebook metro-level price data for CPT 72141 (cervical MRI without contrast) shows independent imaging centres routinely 50 to 70 percent below hospital outpatient pricing in the same city. FAIR Health Consumer data confirms the same pattern at a national level: median freestanding-centre cash-pay rate around $650, median hospital outpatient cash-pay rate around $2,400.
For commercial-insurance patients with a met deductible, typical out-of-pocket is $50 to $400 with copay and coinsurance, regardless of facility, after pre-auth is approved. Pre-authorisation is almost always required for any spinal MRI in the US and skipping it is the leading cause of claim denial.
For high-deductible plans with an unmet deductible, the negotiated in-network rate becomes the price the patient pays. Run both calculations before booking; cash pay at an independent centre frequently beats in-network insurance at a hospital before deductible is met.
For post-motor-vehicle-accident MRI ordered in the workup of whiplash with radicular symptoms, personal-injury-protection coverage on your auto policy will often pay the full cost before health insurance is involved. This is worth confirming with your auto insurer before letting the medical facility bill your health plan, because PIP claims do not draw down your health deductible.
Comparison: cervical vs lumbar vs full spine cost
Cervical and lumbar MRI cost the same to within a few pounds or dollars at most UK and US providers, because the protocol time and radiologist read time are very similar. Full spine MRI, which covers cervical, thoracic and lumbar regions in a single appointment, costs roughly 2.5x to 3x a single-region scan: UK private £700 to £1,500, US cash-pay at imaging centre $1,200 to $4,000, US hospital outpatient $3,500 to $9,000.
Most clinical questions only need the relevant region. Ordering a full spine MRI when a single-region MRI would answer the question is one of the more common ways patients overpay, both in self-pay and high-deductible scenarios. If you have any choice in the matter, ask your referring clinician whether a single-region scan is sufficient.
