Why Americans Pay So Much More
Every other country in the table anchors the price of an MRI to a public fee schedule: the NHS in the UK, provincial health plans in Canada, Medicare's MBS in Australia, and the GOÄ schedule that underpins German self-pay rates. That anchor sets a ceiling and keeps variation small.
The US has no such anchor for cash patients. Each hospital sets its own list price, and the same scan can cost five times more at a hospital than at a freestanding imaging centre two miles away. The result is the widest price range of any country here, from a few hundred dollars to several thousand, for a procedure whose actual cost to deliver is broadly similar everywhere.
The practical takeaway: you do not need to leave the country to get close to international pricing.
